Many different factors can affect the timing of your refund after the IRS receive your tax return. Normally, you can only research the status of your refund 21 days after you filed electronically; 6 weeks after you mailed your paper return. Talking through phone or with walk-in representatives will not accelerate your refund processing. For non-resident, it takes up to 6 months from the date you filed the 1040NR to check your refund.
Link below will help you check federal refund status. You need to enter your Social Security Number, your Filing Number, your Filing Status and the refund amount as shown on your tax return. It will tell you when your return is in received status and if your refund is in approved or sent status.
Sometimes, refund is different than the amount on the tax return, the reasons are listed below:
1.All or part of your refund may have been used (offset) to pay off past-due federal tax, state income tax, state unemployment compensation debts, child support, spousal support, or other federal nontax debts, such as student loans. To find out if you may have an offset or if you have questions about an offset, contact the agency to which you owe the debt.
2.The IRS also may have changed your refund amount because they made changes to your tax return. The IRS will send you a notice explaining the changes.
It takes more time for the IRS to process refund. If you expected to receive refund, you should submit tax return as soon as possible.
